The 7th Volunteer Mountain Division of the SS "Prince Eugen" (German 7.SS-Freiwilligen Gebirgs Division "Prinz Eugen") was formed in March 1942 from Volksdeutsche Croatia, Serbia, Hungary and Romania, named after Prince Eugene of Savoy
The division received notoriety due to the exceptional brutality shown to the civilian population. As reported by Dr. Dusan Nedeljkovic in the report of the Yugoslav State Commission for the Investigation of War Crimes:
"Whatever they come across - they burned everything, everyone was killed and robbed. Officers and soldiers of the SS division "Prince Eugen" committed crimes of exceptional cruelty. The victims were killed, stabbed, tortured, or burned alive in burning houses. If the victim was not caught in his own house, but on the road or in a field away from home, then she was killed and burned in the same place. Even mothers with children, pregnant women and the elderly were killed. In other words, every civilian who was caught by these warriors was killed. It often happened that whole families who did not foresee such treatment or did not have time to flee remained in their homes and were destroyed. Whole families were burned right in the houses. The investigation reported cases of 121 people, mostly women, as well as 30 people aged 60-92 years and 29 children aged 6 months to 14 years who were killed by the cruel methods described above ...
